1. Why Natural?
Bath Springs realizes that preservatives have their place - they kill micro-organisms, but they can't distinguish between good ones and bad ones, so, they end up killing the ones which live peacefully on our skin from birth, forming natural defenses. That's why Bath Springs products contain NATURAL preservatives and when we absolutely have to use added preservatives, we use only the nicer ones! We minimize the use of added preservatives by creating combinations of plant products which conserve themselves naturally and also by hand-making everything with fresh ingredients in small batches.

2. What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are the concentrated extracts of plants and flowers, the life force of the plant. They are found in flowers, leaves, resins, seeds, roots, and grasses. Some plants produce more than one kind of oil. For example, the bitter orange tree produces neroli from its delicate white blossoms, pettigrain from its leaves and orange from the peel of its fruit.
For many oils, it takes a great deal of raw plant material to produce a small amount of essential oil. The aromatic content in the rose is so very small that it takes approximately sixty thousand petals to produce one ounce of rose oil. In some plants, such as the orange, the oil is easily collected from the peel.
Each essential oil has a unique blend of complex chemicals that are responsible for its incredible healing properties. On average, an essential oil may contain as many as 400 constituents. Although each individual constituent has its own value, the synergistic action of the whole gives an essential oil its power.

3. How Are Essential Oils Obtained?
Steam distillation:
The most common process of extracting essential oils is by distillation, a process that isolates the aromatic, volatile part of the plant with steam.
Expression:
Expression or pressing is used primarily for citrus fruits like orange and lemon, where the essential oil is contained in tiny pockets in the peel or rind. Oils extracted by expression are the most volatile and can evaporate quickly when exposed to air or heat.
Solvent extraction:
Flowers too delicate to be processed with heat or pressure are soaked in a spirit solvent that extracts the volatile elements. The solvent is then evaporated at high temperatures leaving only the most fragrant constituents behind. This process produces what is called an absolute.

4. What is the Difference Between Synthetic and Pure Natural Essential Oils?
Synthetic Oils:
Scientists have been able to isolate individual chemical constituents from natural essential oils and to recreate them in the lab, producing less costly alternatives. Synthetic replicas of essential oils, called "nature identical," may capture the fragrance of an essential oil, but, because they do not replicate the complex structure of essential oils, they will never reproduce the synergistic effects or medicinal properties. The replicas can also lead to skin irritations or undesirable side effects, whereas the pure natural essential oil, with all of its components intact, would not. Synthetics lack the life force of essential oils of natural origin and are of no use for applications in aromatherapy.
Pure Essential Oils:
Each oil has its own individual properties and effects. When properly administered, the effects of essential oils can be either stimulating or relaxing, depending on the oils selected. They can soothe and heal the mind, beautify the skin and body, stimulate the senses or induce feelings of calmness. Some essential oils have a variety of properties that are beneficial for the treatment of more than one ailment.

5. How Do Essential Oils Enter Our Body?
Essential oils can enter the body via absorption through the skin or inhalation through the olfactory system. The most powerful applications, such as bath or massage, employ both inhalation and absorption. The molecules of essential oils are so tiny that they quickly enter the bloodstream and are carried to all parts of the body to unlock the body's natural healing powers.
Absorption through the skin:
When essential oils are applied to the skin in a diluted form they are absorbed into the bloodstream and can reach all of the body's vital organs via the lymphatic tissues and the circulatory system.
Absorption through the olfactory system:
With every breath we take, we receive the minutest pieces of information from our environment. The olfactory system carries the fragrance molecules of an essential oil to the Limbic system, the area of the brain connected with the body's basic drives such as hunger, thirst, breathing, sleep patterns, the sex drive, emotions and memories. Scent directly influences the brain producing feelings, sensations and emotions. Essential oils are able to stimulate or relax, to arouse sexual sensations, or to reduce pain. Scents produce a sense of well being throughout the body.

7. Are There Any Precautions I Should be Aware Of?
General Safety:
Essential oils are concentrated and are recommended to be diluted with a carrier oil before using on the skin (with the exception of Lavender and Tea Tree Essential Oils). Essential Oils are not recommended for internal use. Avoid contact with the eyes. If any oil accidentally gets in the eyes, flush with milk rather than water. The fatty content of the milk will dilute the oil, whereas water does not.

8. What Are The Benefits Of Massage?
Massage affects nearly every system of your body. Massage can relieve stress, alleviate pain, flush toxins from tired muscles and help prevent injuries! The rhythmic movements of a massage induce relaxation, which prepares the muscles and increases circulation, benefiting the nervous, muscular and circulatory systems. Because most strokes are performed in the direction of the heart, they speed the passage of deoxygenated blood back to the heart where it is replenished with oxygen and returned to the muscles to help supply them with energy. By the same process, massage also quickens the removal of lactic acid from the muscles, which is a by-product of muscular activity that causes fatigue.
By adding Aromatherapy to your massage you can increase the benefits of massage in many ways, such as relieving symptoms of PMS and cramping, relieving headaches or migraines, providing better sleep habits, or providing a relaxing and fun atmosphere for couples, to name a few.
